SHARJAH AUTISM CENTER CELEBRATES WORLD AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER DAY
Through an integrated program of events and activities throughout April, the Sharjah Autism Center, which is an affiliate of Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS), continues its efforts to promote community awareness and reinforce the concepts of acceptance and inclusion in honor of World Autism Awareness Day 2026, which was designated by the UN under the theme "Autism and Humanity – Every Life Has Value." This program affirms that individuals with autism spectrum disorder are an integral part of society and enjoy equal rights and unconditional human value.
This year's theme, which emphasizes the significance of respecting the diversity of neurological disabilities and encouraging people to participate in various aspects of life, reflects a comprehensive humanitarian vision, expressing the evolution of global awareness from focusing solely on awareness to deeper concepts like acceptance, inclusion, and empowerment.
The Sharjah Autism Center's director, Dr. Siham Al-Humaimat, has confirmed that the center's celebration this year is spread over the entire month of April as it conducts an integrated program of awareness and interactive activities targeting different societal segments with the goal of fostering a culture of acceptance and encouraging the integration of people with autism into society.
Art Gallery for People with ASD In SCHS Centre Al Zahia
She said, “Since the annual art gallery is hosted in SCHS Center Al Zahia, the center has planned a variety of programs for this event. It gives the community a chance to observe the students' artistic ability while also showcasing their talents and boosting their self-confidence.”
The center also organizes a sports festival featuring diverse activities that contribute to developing students' motor and social skills and foster a spirit of cooperation and teamwork. In the same context, the center launches an awareness campaign via social media, including educational digital materials that highlight autism spectrum disorder, correct misconceptions, and promote social acceptance.
43 Teachers and 11 Specialists
Al-Hamimat explained that the Sharjah Autism Center currently provides its services to 137 male and female students with autism spectrum disorder, within specialized educational and rehabilitation programs, supervised by a multidisciplinary team that includes 43 teachers and 11 specialists in the fields of speech and language, occupational therapy, psychological specialization, educational supervision, and social service, in order to ensure the provision of integrated, high-quality services.
The center offers a comprehensive range of services, beginning with diagnosis and assessment, continuing through individualized education programs and positive behavior support programs, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, music therapy, family support and counseling, and educational inclusion services. The center also provides supportive activities such as sports and arts, along with the use of assistive technologies and modern applications to support learning and communication.
Integrated Service Model
She added, “Regarding achievements, the center has successfully developed an integrated model for providing specialized services to individuals with autism spectrum disorder. It has also enabled a number of students to be integrated into mainstream schools, with some transitioning to vocational rehabilitation programs. Furthermore, developing a pathway for students to access centers like the Masarat Rehabilitation Center represents a significant step forward, as it prepares students for vocational training alongside their academic degrees, thus enhancing their opportunities for integration into the job market.”
Outstanding Achievements
The center's translation and application of the TEACCH Transition Assessment Tool (TTAP), which is used to evaluate students' skills in adolescence and beyond and aids in the creation of precise transition programs that support the student's independence and orientation toward working life in accordance with his abilities and needs, is one of its most noteworthy accomplishments.
The center is committed to keeping pace with advancements in special education by employing modern technology, such as the "Yanmo" application for data management and plan development, as well as using tablets, educational, and communication applications like "Bab Noor" to support student learning. It also places great importance on partnership with families, recognizing their essential role in the success of the rehabilitation process.
In conclusion, the Sharjah Autism Center affirms that empowering individuals with autism spectrum disorder extends beyond providing specialized services. It encompasses building an informed society that believes in their abilities and embraces their differences. Every story of progress and every skill acquired represents a step towards a more inclusive and humane future. The Center reaffirms its commitment to continuing its efforts in supporting students and their families and promoting a culture of acceptance and inclusion, based on its belief that every person has value and that investing in people is the foundation for building a cohesive and sustainable society.
