AL WAFA SCHOOL FOR CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

On Monday, December 9, 2019, Al Wafa School for Capacity Development celebrated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities organized this year under the theme “Empowerment and Accessibility” by holding a number of activities and events.  Students with mental disability, their parents, and teachers participated in the celebrations.

The ceremony began with the national anthem of UAE played by the Orcastra of Sharjah Police Sciences Academy. Then, student Maria Rustom delivered the opening speech. Then, student Maitha Abdul Rahim recited some verses from the Holy Quran. The ceremony included a group of various workshops such as the severe and multiple disabilities, handcrafts, music, painting, and tablets.  

Mr. Abdel Nasser Darwish, Al Wafa School Principal (Ramalah Branch), said about the event, “The school celebrates the International Day of Persons with Disabilities every year with the aim of shedding light on their issues and educating society about their rights of inclusion, advocacy, and empowerment”.   “In addition, today’s celebration aims at spotting light on self-advocacy by raising families’ awareness and encourage them to train their children to become self-advocates capable of demanding their rights in every area of life” added Mr. Abdel Nasser Darwish.

On the other hand, he mentioned that the school is planning to organize an informative activity in SCHS Social Services Department on Tuesday.  In addition, the school is going to organize a camp for self-advocacy on Wednesday, December 11, 2019, which will take place at (Ramalah Branch).  The camp will include a dialogue with self-advocate Sheikha Al Qasimi, Representative of Inclusion International for the Middle East and North Africa MENA.

A number of self-advocates are going to tell their success stories and experiences as part of the camp, which is going to host a number of self-advocates from SCHS various sections and departments.

Mr. Abdel Nasser Darwish has confirmed school’s care to raise universities students’ awareness of persons with disabilities issues.  Therefore, the school is going to deliver a number of lectures about rare syndromes for the students of Technology College in December 16.  SCHS will deliver another lecture in the University of Sharjah in December 18 and in Ajman University Collage of Science and Technology in January 21, 2020.

Mr. Abdel Nasser Darwish has confirmed that SCHS Assistive Technology Center will contribute to school’s celebrations of International Day of Persons with Disabilities by organizing a workshop for families about the role of assistive technologies in promoting greater independence for persons with disabilities.  The workshop is going to take place at Sharjah Cultural Palace from December 12 to 17, 2019.
